Cardiovascular Disease Overview

Andrea Ouwerkerk · January 14, 2026

Welcome to the Cardiovascular Disease (CVD) Overview course. CVD is a leading cause of morbidity and mortality worldwide, responsible for an estimated 19.2 million deaths in 2023, accounting for 31% of all global deaths1,2. Each year, around 53 million people across the world develop CVD – that is almost the same as the entire population of the UK³.

The impact is greatest in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs), where approximately 80% of CVD-related deaths occur4,5. While CVD can be prevented through lifestyle modifications, early detection and effective management are crucial for reducing complications and improving health outcomes.

As highly accessible and trusted healthcare professionals, pharmacists are uniquely positioned to make a significant impact in tackling the burden of CVD. This course will equip you with the knowledge and skills to address CVD through a holistic approach by understanding key risk factors, applying community-based health screening, delivering patient education on lifestyle modifications, and emphasising the importance of medication adherence.

What you can expect in this course:

  • Module 1 introduces CVD as a major global health challenge. You will explore what CVD is, the major types of cardiovascular conditions, and current global and regional trends in prevalence and impact. The module highlights why CVD matters to pharmacists and how early identification, prevention, and support can reduce disease burden.
  • Module 2 focuses on the pathophysiology and risk factors underlying major cardiovascular conditions, including hypertension, dyslipidaemia, ischaemic heart disease, stroke, arrhythmias, and heart failure. You will learn to identify modifiable and non-modifiable risk factors, apply validated cardiovascular risk assessment tools, and interpret community-based screening results to guide evidence-based decision-making.
  • Module 3 explores lifestyle modification and the expanding role of pharmacists in cardiovascular care. You will examine evidence-based interventions such as smoking cessation, healthy diet, physical activity, and weight management, and learn how to deliver practical, culturally appropriate counselling that supports sustained behaviour change and improves cardiovascular outcomes.

Learning outcomes

By the end of this course you will be able to:

  • Discuss the global significance of cardiovascular disease, the major types of cardiovascular disease and current epidemiological trends.
  • Explain and differentiate the pathophysiology and risk factors for major cardiovascular diseases.
  • Apply validated risk assessment tools and strategies for cardiovascular disease to guide decision-making and support patient care.
  • Describe the role of pharmacists in cardiovascular care across prevention, monitoring and management.

The purpose of this course is not only to build your understanding of CVD, its risk factors, and management strategies, but also to promote meaningful and lasting changes in how you support people at risk of, or living with, CVD in your everyday pharmacy practice.

To support this, the course has been intentionally designed to move beyond passive knowledge acquisition. Across all three modules, you will be encouraged to reflect on your current practice, recognise local and system-level challenges (such as limited access to diagnostics, medicines, or referral pathways), and strengthen your confidence to make practical, evidence-based decisions that improve cardiovascular outcomes within your setting.

CVD is a complex, multifactorial condition driven by interactions between biological, behavioural, social, and environmental factors. While pharmacological therapy remains a cornerstone of CVD prevention and management, effective care requires a broader, patient-centred approach that includes:

  • Proactively identifying risks early and risk reduction, through assessment of modifiable risk factors such as hypertension, dyslipidaemia, smoking, diet, physical inactivity, obesity, and alcohol use.
  • Collaboration with the multidisciplinary healthcare team, including primary care providers, nurses, dietitians, and specialist services, to support coordinated prevention, monitoring, and long-term management.
  • Empowering patients and caregivers to take an active role in their cardiovascular health by supporting lifestyle modification, medication adherence, self-monitoring, and timely help-seeking when symptoms or risk factors change.

Each module is designed to link knowledge directly to action. You will be prompted to consider how pathophysiology and risk factors translate into real-world clinical decisions, how lifestyle interventions can be delivered in brief but impactful pharmacy encounters, and how your role as a pharmacist extends beyond medication supply to prevention, education, monitoring, and follow-up.

Throughout the course, you will encounter opportunities to reflect on your own behaviours, identify practical changes you can implement immediately, and adapt best-practice recommendations to your local context, including resource-constrained environments.

We encourage you to engage fully with these behaviour-focused elements. Use them to challenge existing habits, support your colleagues, and deliver consistent, patient-centred cardiovascular care that reduces risk, improves quality of life, and contributes to better long-term outcomes for individuals and communities affected by CVD.

This course should take approximately 3 hours to complete.
